Across Southeast Asia, there are many communities we can work with to empower, fostering long-standing relationships with our neighbours in the process.
WeeTrip is an annual overseas service project organised by WeeVolunteer for students in WKWSCI. Over the years, teams have been to various countries in Southeast Asia, including Laos and Vietnam.
We aim to offer sustainable volunteer opportunities with a media focus, by embarking on long-term projects that can make use of our skills as communications students.
The team spent a week in Phuanmit School building relationships with the students and staff, and assisted with building a drain system for the school. They also conducted lessons with the school’s secondary students covering content on ASEAN, Photography, Graphic Design and Communication Skills. The second half of the programme was held in the city centre, where the team made use of their communication skills by collecting stories and capturing images to spread awareness about lesser-known stories and issues facing our neighbours in Laos.

With Covid-19 and travel restrictions still in full swing, the team continued to pursue remote volunteering opportunities, working with participants from Souphanouvong University in crafting social media campaigns, as well as volunteers from non-profit organisation Keep Helping Each Other, where we produced videos in collaboration with their team.

The team held WeeTrip remotely for the first time. They developed a social media campaign for Do The Kindness, a non-profit organisation that sponsors the education and living expenses of young girls in Laos. The campaign raised awareness about the challenges girls face in securing an education in Laos and garnered donations for Do The Kindness. The team also conducted a four-week content creation workshop for university students over Zoom, covering skills in photography, photo editing, graphic design and Instagram marketing. The participants learnt to maximise the use of their mobile phones to stay relevant amidst a changing digital landscape.

The team spent a week in Ban Houehing Village building a relationship with the welcoming villagers and assisted with assembling a water filtration system for the village. They also returned to the village WeeTrip visited last year, Ban Houehin, to repair the water pipe that was damaged by bad weather. The spent the next seven days in the city centre making use of their communication skills by collecting stories and capturing images to spread awareness about lesser-known stories and issues facing our neighbours in Laos.
