LUANG PRABANG, Laos: In Laos, tuktuk drivers often steer away from picking up injured passengers because superstition calls that bad luck will follow if someone dies in their vehicle. Hospital ambulances are not cheap alternatives for those without insurance too.

Here is where Luang Prabang Kadeng Laos Ambulance Rescue Unit comes in. The volunteer-run emergency service helps those involved in accidents at no cost, relying on a strong volunteer network and donations from the public to sustain their rescue efforts.

We follow Mr Toulakone Souphinthong, one of the key rescuers in the unit, around their facility and day-to-day tasks as he shares about his journey, challenges and what it takes to be a rescuer.
