Winnie Tan is the Head of Community Engagement and Sustainability for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore and the ASA region (ASEAN & South Asia).

She is responsible for driving the development and implementation of the Bank’s sustainability strategy in the region. Her portfolio also includes the governance and delivery of the Bank’s community engagement programmes across ASA region.

Before returning to Singapore to assume this role in 2015, Winnie was the Head of Sustainability & Brand for Standard Chartered Bank in China. She was responsible for the sustainability and community investment programmes, and the chief architect for the Bank’s corporate brand strategy in China.

Winnie joined the Bank in Singapore in 2005. She worked on both Group and Singapore Wholesale Banking communications before relocating to Shanghai in 2007 as the Communications lead for the Bank’s Local Incorporation in China.

Prior to joining the Bank, Winnie was a marketing specialist in news and publishing firms – Singapore Press Holdings, The Edge Singapore and Dow Jones & Company.

'Soaring Solos' is a community-building campaign that focused on improving the quality of lives of Single Unwed Mothers in Singapore. 'Soaring Solos' strived to connect Single Unwed Mothers with one another, as well as with organisations that would best understand their situation and be of help to them. At the same time, the project sought to improve the flow of information and resources to these mothers, so that these mothers can make well-informed decisions quickly.

The Role of Selective Exposure in Preserving Decision Diversity and Group Performance

Previous research has shown that group decisions obtained by aggregating independent and diverse decisions are typically more accurate than individual decisions. Although decisions in the real world are not independent due to social influence, group decisions have performed well. This project examines why group decisions perform well in the real world despite social influence by considering the countervailing effects of selective exposure, and highlights the usefulness of selective exposure amidst negative portrayals in extant literature.

The Grubs is an animated fantasy short film about Jane, a teenage girl who gets sucked into a vending machine and is forced to navigate through the magical workings of an entire society of Grub people that exist to power vending machines on the island.

The film explores dark themes such as exploitation, loneliness & isolation, and social divide as the Grub people exist as a metaphor for the migrant worker community in Singapore. Under the guide of a bright and bold art style, similar to that of a children’s novella, “The Grubs” takes you on a an emotional roller coaster from start to end.

Kelvin Kao

Kelvin is the co-founder and CEO of PROTOCOL, an award-winning creative agency. Listed amongst the finalists for Marketing Interactive’s Creative Agency for the Year for 2 years running, PROTOCOL’s portfolio of clients include brands like Mandai, Meiji, Starhub, Nestle, Canon and Meiji, amongst others.

Together with his wife and WKWSCI classmate Daphne, Kelvin is also the co-founder of production studio UNMASTERED as well as content portal GEN X Singapore. In 2021 they started a cafe called Main Street Commissary which features a rotating gallery of local creatives from poets to tattoo artists and taxidermists.

Daniel Tan Boon Hwee

Vice President of Growth Marketing at HBOMax

As the Vice-President of Growth Marketing at HBO Max, Daniel Tan is the marketing leader responsible for the full-funnel marketing strategy of the subscription streaming service in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, with broad responsibilities for subscriber acquisition, retention and growth, brand awareness, creative development, social media and consumer insights.

Riding the wave of digital and media transformation, Daniel leads teams that create disruptive, deeply local and data-driven campaigns featuring multi-platform experiences. He also drives performance marketing, CRM and customer experience strategies across subscriber lifecycles, and leads publicity and communications including media and talent relations. Before joining HBO Max in 2021, he was at The Walt Disney Company and held various positions, including marketing head at Disney+, Content Sales, Media Networks, Consumer Products, Games and Publishing, and the Head of Studio Entertainment in Malaysia and Singapore.

During his eight years with Disney, Daniel led Disney+ launches in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, making it the #1 streaming service in Southeast Asia, surpassing Netflix and Viu in less than 10 months. He also delivered 7 of the top 10 grossing 2019 films in Singapore and 6 of the top 10 in Malaysia, including Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Aladdin, The Lion King and Frozen 2. In addition to his work at HBO Max, Daniel served as Adjunct Teaching Mentor at the Singapore Management University, where he coached students with experiential learning as they performed research, analyzed data and developed digital strategic proposals.

Daphne is a Creative Services Manager at Infinite Frameworks Pte Ltd, an award-winning post-production and visual effects facility. She has won several accolades at the Promax Awards, which are the world's premier celebration of outstanding achievement in entertainment marketing and design.

These include Silver award for Clip Based Entertainment Promo at Promax World 2018, Gold winner for Best Children’s Programme Promo at Promax Asia 2013 and Gold winner for Best Holiday/Seasonal Promo at Promax Asia 2012 — a testament to her ability as a producer.

Tan Tam Mei

Thailand Correspondent at The Straits Times

Thailand Correspondent Tam Mei has been reporting for The Straits Times from Bangkok since June 2021. Before being posted overseas, she spent time at the paper's features desk, and covered manpower, security, crime and social-related stories as well.

One of her highlights include a scoop on the Singapore government allowing the use of medical cannabis for select child patients with epilepsy. This multi-story package involved trips to South Korea and Thailand to report on their medical weed regulations. She was also involved in the paper's coverage of the Myanmar coup, and other notable events including the general elections and the fatal SCDF ragging incident in 2018.

She cut her teeth as a cub reporter at The New Paper where she covered the crime, court and government policy beats. Her current coverage in Thailand ranges from the latest political events, like the power moves within the coalition and opposition parties, and social issues such as the children's rights' crisis arising from the pandemic.

She also writes on a wide range of human interest stories, with on-the-ground interviews of people living in Thailand. For example, the impact of the persistent street protests on low-income residents living near these sites, and the severe and social fallout due to the lack of vaccines and medical care when the pandemic first started.

People find it hard to do their daily lessons on Duolingo due to a lack of “free time”. However, 90% of people bring their phones along with them to the toilet, playing games, reading, and scrolling through social media. Turns out, everyone has free time… when they drop the deuce. The campaign matches the daily habit of dropping the deuce with daily language lessons. With lenticular posters, out-of-home and AR filters, the team will remind users that learning a language is easy, just Drop a Deuce with Duo.

Drop a Deuce with Duo was also submitted to the D&AD 2022 New Blood Awards, one of the largest competitions for emerging creatives to exercise and showcase their talents on briefs set in partnership with some of the world’s leading brands.

In a world of fitter, faster, stronger, better; they asked themselves -- what about 'together'? As part of the CS4070 Issue in Advertising module, the team got to pitch an idea to the global fitness brand, Gymshark. They wanted to come up with a product or advertising idea that would help communities break significant barriers they faced to conditioning.

Identifying the blind community as one that faces significant challenges keeping fit and going to the gym, the team felt that the blind community had every right, just like anyone else, to visit the gym and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Combining creativity and research, they came up with 'Shark Sense', a necklace line that can detect and describe the gym for a visually impaired user. It integrates visual technology from Microsoft's Seeing AI -- an application designed for the low vision community.

The project idea was recognised by AKQA and has been shortlisted for the upcoming Future Lions Global Advertising Award Competition.

Under WeeVolunteer, this team partnered with Calm Collective Asia, a mission-driven organisation that aims to break the stigma of mental health in Asia to create a campaign that supports the organistion’s existing social media presence.

Amidst the pandemic, mental health and wellbeing have been a growing concern in Singapore and around the world. Inspired to contribute in their ways, this campaign was a meaningful collaboration that allowed the team to put their communications skills to practice for an important cause that has a direct impact on those around us.

The team took charge of the full campaign from ideation, design, production and copywriting, working together to bring the content to life. The collaterals encompassed Calm Collective's message of normalising mental health conversations in society, with each piece of content specially constructed to educate the public, as well as encourage anyone going through difficult times to push through. They also explored the use of creative and new methods to engage with their audience, consisting of deliverablessuch as short-form videos, an Instagram filter and Telegram stickers, apart from the usual Instagram posts. The team also contributed content to the organisation’s newly launched TikTok account.

Zeen, the Special Projects Officer of the 29th CI Club, has had such a lasting impression during her term that several freshmen have expressed a strong desire to emulate her.

Zeen is an amazing person with a huge heart and a listening ear for freshmen. She is a key player in involving her batch in the myriad of school events, and can be counted on to be there at WKWSCI initiatives and adventures.

Zeen's work speaks volumes, and has contributed so much that listening to her speak about her experiences in the school imparts valuable lessons about life in WKWSCI.

Athena, President of the 29th CI Club, shoulders the responsibility of leading the CI Club. Even so, she still takes the time to check up on her peers, listen to them and have heartfelt conversations to better understand them. It is staggeringly impressive how, on top of all of her other commitments, she also still manages to do well in her own coursework.
