Winnie Tan is the Head of Community Engagement and Sustainability for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore and the ASA region (ASEAN & South Asia).

She is responsible for driving the development and implementation of the Bank’s sustainability strategy in the region. Her portfolio also includes the governance and delivery of the Bank’s community engagement programmes across ASA region.

Before returning to Singapore to assume this role in 2015, Winnie was the Head of Sustainability & Brand for Standard Chartered Bank in China. She was responsible for the sustainability and community investment programmes, and the chief architect for the Bank’s corporate brand strategy in China.

Winnie joined the Bank in Singapore in 2005. She worked on both Group and Singapore Wholesale Banking communications before relocating to Shanghai in 2007 as the Communications lead for the Bank’s Local Incorporation in China.

Prior to joining the Bank, Winnie was a marketing specialist in news and publishing firms – Singapore Press Holdings, The Edge Singapore and Dow Jones & Company.

During the circuit breaker period in 2020, families were cooped up at home to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. While some found it as a break from daily life, an invisible group found themselves trapped round the clock with their abusers.

The Association of Women for Action and Research released a report in July last year, shedding light on a particularly vulnerable segment of Singapore's population - migrant wives - who had made more distress calls to the advocacy group during this period.

Migrant wives married to Singaporean men make up a substantial portion of Singapore’s population. In 2019, one in four marriages was between a Singaporean groom and a migrant wife. Most hail from developing countries in Asia, and tend to come from a lower socio-economic background. Leaving their motherland behind, they face a lack of social ties, little familial support, and culture shock as they struggle to belong in their new home country.

Many of the women are first placed on Short-Term or Long-Term Visit Passes before they can apply for Permanent Residency. These passes make them dependent on their spouses for housing, income, and social security. These dependencies exacerbate the power imbalance in the marriage, allowing Singaporean husbands to exploit them in abuse cases.

Due to their foreigner status, foreign wives are rejected from state benefits and assistance even after they have sought help. Though they work here, marry our men, and raise Singaporean children, why does their status continue to exclude them from the Singapore core?

The team explores what it means for migrant wives when they marry to Singapore.

“So Far Yet So Near” explores the theoretical mechanisms behind virtual reality's (VR) ability to induce empathy and prosocial behaviour by proposing a conceptual framework based on Construal Level Theory (CLT). It posits that increased perceptions of virtual presence, together with a reduction of perceived psychological distance, may translate into prosocial behaviours such as intention to donate money and volunteer.

Singapore: a bustling metropolitan city-state. In a staggeringly short timespan, it has become a ‘first world’ nation despite its geographical and historical limitations. But what does this mean to the people who live within her borders?

An intimate look at Singapore as a body, "Between These Bones" is a poetic exploration of the everyday lives of people in the country. The film looks at how they cope with the inherent limitations presented in spaces within the country and how they attempt to transcend them.

Divided into three chapters, each segment explores the effects of space on different individuals. The documentary considers how a space, despite being heavily controlled, is ultimately defined by the people who live in them.

Colwin Tanhehco leads the Philippine market brand and product marketing for vivo, a leading global smartphone brand.

Leveraging his extensive experiences as Data Analyst and Research Assistant with Apple and Nanyang Technological University, he is responsible for delivering data-driven marketing campaigns for vivo, including multi-seven figure dollar partnership deals with global brands such as NBA, Spotify, and Benefit Cosmetics.

As a first-time entrant, Colwin’s work recently bagged three Gold Stevie® Awards from the 2021 Asia-Pacific Stevie® Awards for vivo with its innovative video campaigns, making it the only smartphone brand to win at this year’s prestigious awards program.

Tan Hui Er

Hui Er is the co-founder of Not Safe For TV – a platform driving culture and change, with bold visuals and authentic storytelling. Alongside NSFTV, Hui Er explores alternative perspectives and progresses the boundaries of content in the media landscape.

She has worked on projects with Facebook, Esplanade and Singapore Tourism Board.

Hui Er believes that experiencing stories have the power to effect social change and finds purpose in unravelling the human condition with her audience.

Hariz Baharudin

Political Journalist at The Straits Times

Hariz is a political journalist with The Straits Times. He covers political issues ranging from terrorism, security, parliament debates and political-related tech news. Beyond these, Hariz also reports on the Covid-19 situation and has written stories on social issues like inequality and race and religion.

He was awarded the Singapore Press Holdings Young Journalist of the Year Award in 2018, and has won other internal and external awards for his stories. Most recently, Hariz was recognised for co-authoring a series of features on the digital divide caused by Covid-19.

Some notable highlights of his career include his extensive reporting on the Singapore General Elections, the coverage of the 2018 North Korea-United States Singapore Summit that took place in June 2018, and attending several international high-profile conferences in the United States, Germany, Paris and Slovakia.

Julia is a Communication Strategist with vast experience spanning communications and creative agencies, and in-house roles. She began her career at leading global PR firm Edelman, spearheading its consumer practice in Singapore. She then took on the role of a General Manager at highly-regarded independent creative shop The Secret Little Agency, working with clients such as DBS, the Economic Development Board, Tiger Beer and Mandai Parks.

Prior to her current role, Julia was appointed VP of Integrated Communications for Lazada Group in the region, where she oversaw the launch communications for the eCommerce company’s rebranding and shoppertainment efforts.

Today, she is Managing Partner at independent communications agency AKA Asia – awarded PRCA’s Large Consultancy of the Year 2020, #9 in the Global Creative Index of the world’s most creative PR agencies (pound for pound), and PRovoke’s 2020 Best Mid-Sized Agency to Work for in Asia Pacific.

Alexa is a highly recognised media executive with close to 10 years of industry experience in content distribution, advertising and production. She was named one of Content Asia’s Young Media Stars at its annual Asia Media Woman of the Year awards in 2018.

She has been in the pulse of major media networks like Discovery, A+E and most recently, the VICE Media Group where she focuses on branded content sales and distribution in APAC.

Beyond her work in the media industry, Alexa also founded SoulSafe For Work, an independent content platform dedicated to bring awareness to and address workplace mental health issues.

In examining the layers and nuances of self, we question our identity and get lost in the whirlwind of personas we put forward. It seems as though a different version of ourselves exists for different circumstances and thus, we perform to conform. But with each performance we bring to the surface a piece of ourselves, and they all come together to form a beautiful whole.

With the film touching on the personal subject of individuality, the film mainly capitalizes on close-ups of the dancer to create a sense of intimacy between the audience and the subject. This includes shots of her neck, arms, and legs as she moves. The film also aims to use the vibrancy (or lack thereof) of the different locations to capture the subject’s mental state. For instance, the slowness and darkness of the underwater shots will be used to convey uncertainty and the feeling of being stifled, whereas the brightness and openness of the garden reflects a sense of rebirth and renewal. While none of us have truly attained the self-assuredness we seek, this film shows you what we think it feels like.

Genesis is a performative documentary on the journey of self-discovery, interpreted through dance.

As the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged the globe and forced border closures, 14 journalism students aiming to travel overseas for a reporting module set their sights on migrant workers at home instead. They visited dormitories that were once quarantine sites, spoke to workers who were minutes away from flying back to their home countries and uncovered stories of the men’s lives in lockdown. The students were taking part in Go-Far, Going Far for Advanced Reporting, a journalism module under Prof Hedwig Alfred and Mr Sam He. The team also won Best Story, Best Commentary and Best Visuals for the month of October in the Stories of A Pandemic Awards.

The Slow Press is an independent food magazine founded by Christy (CS'22), who is joined by Tan Aik (CS'22), Melody Koh (CS'22), Tan Tong (CS'22), Lauren Lim (CS'22), and Ngiam Ze Qin and a family of contributors. With great attention paid to delivering quality food journalism, the magazine seeks to uncover the stories behind food – the people, cultures, history, and everything else, to let Singaporeans better appreciate what goes into their stomachs. While the bulk of their editorial efforts goes towards publishing both digital and print magazines which are accompanied by events organised together with the team's friends in the F&B industry, they are constantly generating content to spark everyday conversations about food on their Instagram page. Through hosting Instagram takeovers with industry professionals and hobbyists, reimagining food in the most abstract ways in their shoots, and documenting their community through interviews and photographing their memories, they are dedicated to talking about food in ways you've probably never encountered before. At the end of the day, they are all about having fun and letting everyone enjoy the fruits that we reap and the juice that we squeeze.

Young Entrepreneur Award Recipient

Ng Yi Yang (CS'21) believes in the value of uplifting others just like how others have done so for him. Through the past four years, he has embarked on projects that aimed to serve those around him and create a culture of growing together.

When founding FLMNT.CO, he empowered fellow video content creators to share knowledge, opportunities and expertise with one another, and create opportunities to monetise their skills. They worked with clients such as BASE Entertainment, Lazada, Grab, Downtown East and more to create video campaigns.

Similarly, ZYRUP Media pushes the envelope further with content creation focusing on youth empowerment and edutainment for youths in Singapore. As a content marketing/video production startup and online magazine, the launch of their educational talk show, “I Have A Question”, saw 13k views over the two episodes launched, and he hosts “#Adulting with Former Children”, a weekly talkshow on Clubhouse in the largest youth-focused club in Singapore with over a thousand members. They’ve worked with clients like AIA, DBS, HDB, TikTok, including shooting a TV commercial for OSIM.

Soapbox.sg is a student-volunteer-run online publication he founded to give budding journalists opportunities to write, chase stories and gain on the job experience without the shackles of the classroom. Knowledge is power and Soapbox.sg aims to empower and get students invested in shaping their student experience.

With these ventures, he hoped to create an ecosystem of student-led ventures that would give students a chance to grow their craft in a supportive environment.

WeeVolunteer AY20/21

In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, WeeVolunteer (WeeVo) was able to adapt and provide WKWSCI students and staff with opportunities to give back to the community locally and abroad.

Locally, instead of physical volunteering, WeeVo conducted Zoom sessions for volunteers to interact with our beneficiaries at MINDS@Napiri every weekend, and also initiated letter writing sessions, pre-recorded volunteer sessions, and other remote opportunities for the elderly residents and our partnering organisations.

Internationally, WeeVo conducted workshops for struggling businesses and students in Laos to upgrade their digital marketing skills, to help them cope amidst the COVID-19 crisis. On top of that, they conducted a social campaign in partnership with DoTheKindness, to aid the girls under the care of the business owner.

In between these programmes, WeeVo conducted a fundraiser for the Beirut crisis, along with donation drives and canvassing efforts in order to better provide assistance to their beneficiaries. A new volunteer wing was also founded, and was launched by introducing Cleaner's Appreciation Day in WKWSCI, as well as a Beach Cleanup event to remind people to be more environmentally conscious.

In spite of the circumstances through the year, WeeVo made itself adaptable to the situation and was still able to give back to the various communities in Singapore, as well as those abroad. Their dedication to serving the various communities in need of aid through the ups and downs of the COVID-19 crisis exemplifies why they are deserving of this nomination.

Besides actively engaging in school events, Charmaine has upheld the WKWSCI spirit through involvement and planning. After being part of Paparazzi Theatre Production, WeeJam and the 25th CI Club, her desire to create a vibrant school environment urged her to lead the 28th CI Club as the Vice President. As a compassionate, understanding and peaceable person, Charmaine is known to be a team player who wants the best for everyone. She goes above and beyond to help those around her through sharing the latest opportunities and addressing questions about school. Her approachable disposition has made WKWSCI feel welcoming to prospective students and peers alike.
