LUANG PRABANG, Laos: There is a common belief in the Laotian community that karma or bad luck is to blame when a child is born with a disability. As such, they are often misunderstood and isolated in society, impacting their education, employment opportunities and social relationships.

Sister Souksavahn is the Head Nun at Sister of Charity Luang Prabang Deaf and Mute Community Training Centre, a special school that aims to provides deaf and mute students with access to education and vocational training in hopes of improving their employability and helping them develop the skills and knowledge they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Hear from Fai and Boonthit, two students at the centre, as they share their stories and their hopes for the future.
